BROMES, A DANGER FOR DOGS AND CATS

The Brome is the common name for a particular plant of the grass family, which is very present in our countryside and can be quite insidious for our pets.

The dangerousness of the brome derives from their "arrow" conformation: the part attached to the stem of the plant is pointed and hard, and the whole ear is covered with tiny "thorns". Precisely because of its shape, the brome can implant itself in the skin or enter certain areas and is destined to move forward in its path, never returning. This explains why they are so potentially insidious to the health of our four-legged friends.

The problem of the brome is a very serious one because it often gets into the ears, nose or skin of dogs and cats and causes serious damage, especially if it is not noticed in time.

The arrival of summer and walks in nature bring dogs and cats into greater contact with this type of plant. Unfortunately (and fortunately in many other respects) our pets are curious and sometimes, just by sticking their noses in the grass and sniffing, they can inhale these particular spikes. But although this causes us understandable concern, we should not give up enjoying outdoor activities with our pets.

The advice I can give is to avoid, where possible, areas where these plants tend to be numerous or, in the absence of alternative areas, it is important to remember to inspect your dogs carefully on returning from a walk.

We should brush them well, checking inside their ears and observing if they sneeze frequently or shake their heads. These could be signs that something in their nose or ears is bothering them.

If your dog has a brome in his nose or ears, I would advise against DIY: it would be much better to take him to your vet as, due to the particular conformation of this plant, we may not be able to remove it completely on our own and leaving some fragments would cause discomfort even after some time. Moreover, when it comes to noses and ears, our pets are not so cooperative, so the help of a professional is certainly essential.

Remember, however, that a general check-up and brushing will allow us to identify these spikes early and remove them before they can lead to serious damage.
