CYSTITIS IN CATS

Cystitis in cats is a rather common pathology and consists of an inflammation of the bladder that can have different causes.

Understanding that your cat is suffering from cystitis is not so complicated, as the clinical manifestation of the disease includes some symptoms that may then recur over time following recurrences.

The cat usually has difficulty urinating, in particular, assuming strange positions when urinating and only emitting a few drops of pee because it feels pain.

Sometimes, due to the discomfort, the cat urinates in inappropriate places, outside the litter box. Don't think of it as a spite, but rather try to understand if the reason can be traced back to pain and discomfort.

Another sign of possible cystitis could also be the presence of blood in the urine (inside the litter tray or where the cat has urinated).

Once you have realised that your cat is suffering from cystitis, it is important to identify the cause. The main causes of cystitis are as follows:

  • Bacterial, i.e. due to an infection, the bladder becomes inflamed and this causes pain and discomfort. The diagnosis can be made with a complete urine test and a bacteriological examination that identifies the type of bacteria involved, so that the most appropriate antibiotic can be used and the famous antibiotic resistance can be avoided. In addition, it is always important to use supplements that promote the wellbeing of the urinary tract in order to reduce the risk of recurrence as much as possible.
  • For the presence of urinary stones of various kinds. These foreign bodies cause inflammation and pain, and in the most severe cases there may be a real urinary obstruction, i.e. some of these small stones may proceed towards the urethra, thus blocking the flow of urine to the outside. In this case, it is essential to understand what type of stone we are dealing with in order to undertake the right therapy, which usually includes the use of specific foodstuffs to dissolve the stones, the use of supplements to help dissolve the stones (if these can be treated with foodstuffs) and, if necessary, drug therapy prescribed by your vet.
  • Stress: Cats that are more sensitive to stressful events may manifest this discomfort in the form of so-called stress cystitis, for which treatment appropriate to the cause is required. In these cats, it is essential to keep stress levels low, avoiding changes in the environment and using natural products that reduce stress, such as lemon balm, valerian or the use of pheromones or natural substances that have the same function.

There are also other causes, such as malformations, tumours, trauma, hormonal dysfunction, diabetes, etc., which should be investigated with your vet.
